Who needs IFTA
You need IFTA if you drive across state lines in a qualified motor vehicle: two axles and over 26,000 lbs, three or more axles, or a combination over 26,000 lbs. Most semis and many hotshot combos need it. Most box trucks under 26,001 lbs and cargo vans do not.
Quarterly deadlines
- Q1 (Jan–Mar): due April 30
- Q2 (Apr–Jun): due July 31
- Q3 (Jul–Sep): due October 31
- Q4 (Oct–Dec): due January 31
Records to keep
- Miles driven in each state, from your ELD or GPS
- Every fuel receipt: date, state, gallons and price
- Keep records for at least 4 years, because audits look back
Common mistakes
Missing fuel receipts, guessing state miles, and filing late. Late filing brings penalties and interest, and can lead to an audit.

Does a box truck need IFTA?
Not if it's a two-axle truck at 26,000 lbs or less and doesn't pull a trailer that pushes it over.
